What Is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)?
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a prescription-only weekly injection made by Eli Lilly. It acts on two gut hormones — GLP-1 and GIP — that regulate appetite and blood sugar. In Singapore it is approved by the HSA for both type 2 diabetes and weight management.
By acting on these hormones, Mounjaro helps with weight loss in three ways:
Smaller appetite
Signals fullness to your brain, so you're satisfied with less.
Fuller for longer
Slows how quickly food leaves your stomach.
Steadier blood sugar
Helps insulin work after meals and reduces sugar spikes.
Mounjaro works alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular activity — it makes those changes easier to stick to, rather than replacing them.
Am I Eligible for Mounjaro in Singapore?
Under its HSA approval for weight management, Mounjaro may be prescribed to adults who meet either of these:
BMI 30 or above
No other health condition is needed.
BMI 27–29.9 + a weight-related condition

How Much Weight Can You Lose on Mounjaro?
Results depend on your weekly dose, which your doctor builds up gradually (see the dosage schedule below). Average body weight lost after 72 weeks in the SURMOUNT-1 trial (2,539 adults with obesity or overweight, without diabetes), alongside diet and exercise:

Mounjaro Dosage Schedule
You start low and build up slowly — this gives your body time to adjust and helps reduce side effects such as nausea. All doses are once a week.

Mounjaro Side Effects
Common — usually mild
These are most common when starting or stepping up a dose, and tend to ease. Smaller, less greasy meals and plenty of water help.
See a doctor promptly if you have
- Severe, persistent stomach pain (possible pancreatitis)
- Upper-right belly pain or yellowing skin (gallbladder)
- Swelling, rash or difficulty breathing (allergy)
- Vomiting or diarrhoea that won't settle (dehydration, which can affect the kidneys)
- Shakiness, sweating or confusion if you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea (low blood sugar)
On the oral contraceptive pill? Mounjaro can make it less reliable — use a barrier method as well for 4 weeks after starting and after each dose increase. Not a complete list; our doctor will go through the risks with you.

Yes. The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) approved Mounjaro for weight management in 2025, for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight-related condition. It is also approved for type 2 diabetes. It is a prescription-only medicine.
Mounjaro can only be obtained with a doctor's prescription from a licensed clinic or hospital — it is not sold over the counter. Avoid online sellers and overseas websites — injections bought this way may be counterfeit, contaminated or wrongly dosed.
Mounjaro prescribed for weight management is generally not claimable under MediSave or CHAS. Some private or employer insurance plans may cover part of the cost — check with your insurer, and ask our staff for an itemised invoice if you need one.
Mounjaro is injected once a week, on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food. It goes just under the skin of your stomach, thigh or upper arm — rotate the site each week. You can change your injection day, as long as doses are at least 3 days (72 hours) apart. Missed a dose? Take it within 4 days (96 hours); otherwise skip it and carry on from your usual day. Many people notice a smaller appetite within the first few weeks. Weight loss is gradual because the dose is built up slowly, every four weeks. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, weight continued to fall over the full 72 weeks of treatment. Individual results vary.
Appetite usually returns, and weight often comes back. In the SURMOUNT-4 trial, people who stopped tirzepatide after 36 weeks saw their weight rise by an average of 14% over the next year, while those who continued lost a further 5.5%.
